Using Games in Teaching English for Kids

Games become not only an important part of child’s life but also an useful and efficient tool in learning English. There are many advantages of using games in the classroom:

  1. They are motivating and challenging.
  2. Learning a language requires a great deal of effort.
  3. Games help students to make and sustain the effort of learning.
  4. Games provide language practice in the various skills- speaking, writing, listening and reading.
  5. They encourage students to interact and communicate.
  6. They create a meaningful context for language use.
  7. Vocabulary games bring real world context into the classroom, and increase students’ use of English in a flexible, meaningful and communicative way.
  8. Games usually involve friendly competition and they keep students interested in learning the language.
  9. Games can help children learn and hang on to new words more easily

From these advantages of using games, the teacher should pay attention that:

  • Games are often used as short warm-up activities or when there is some time left at the end of a lesson. In this case, a game should not be regarded as a marginal activity filling in odd moments when the teacher and class have nothing better to do. Games ought to be at the heart of teaching foreign languages.
  • Games can be used at all stages of the lesson. But teachers must be sure that games provided are suitable and carefully selected by the teachers.
  • Before playing a game teachers should give attention to the number of students, proficiency level, cultural context, timing, learning topic, and the classroom settings.
  • Games also lend themselves well to revision exercises helping learners recall material in a pleasant, entertaining way.

Setting Up Group Work

Group work plays an important method in children’s learning. There are some advantages and disadvantages of this method:

*Advantages of group work:

-This method reduces the pressure on the students
-It makes the work easier
-sharing of ideas.
-it makes your product become more perfect because more ideas are being shared and more brilliant minds participate in the activity

*Disadvantages of group work:

-Someone tends to depend on others
-Someone keeps doing tasks while others is disruption like talking with their friends or reading story, etc.
-unequal distribution of work

Group work is an useful and efficient way of working in teaching language. I suppose that your student do not want to set up group when you put them in to group in order to practice exercise, what should you do?

In my opinion, you should follow some steps to control group work:

-Set the task clearly
-Start with pair interaction then move to groups of three then larger groups
-Give instructions about how to get into groups
-Set specific time limit
-Give clear guidance as what is expected at the end of discussions

What is Classroom Management?

A good classroom management is a golden key to interact the target language in meaningful ways. There are some factors create an effective learning environment:

– Students pay attention
– Listen to teacher and each other
– Understand what they have to do
– Respect each other and teacher
– Share things
– Stimulating and motivating learning materials
– Students actively participate: work collaboratively and in co- operation; students are productively engaged
– Positive teacher/ students relationship: praise and encouragement from the teacher; emphasis on building self esteem and confidence; positive behaviour is valued

A Few Teaching Aids

Teaching aid is a tool used by teachers, facilitators, or tutors to :

+ Help learners improve reading and other skills

+ Illustrate or reinforce a skill, fact, or idea,

+ Relieve anxiety, fears, or boredom, since many teaching aids are like games.

Teaching Aids has provided students, parents and teachers with one of the largest selections of instructional supplies.

Finding the best educational toys is easy now. Mat, play things, abacus and wooden trays for stacking. Children improve their motor skills when introduced to these concepts.

Charts and ready wooden toys to explain fruits and flowers are so innovative. Children love the flash card, big banners and unusual shapes. When they are able to touch and feel things, they have a better approach towards it. Along with verbal dialogues, expression and the right kind of words children are able to get the concepts right. Kids love the fun part in learning. Actually that excites them. But as academics are a part of the learning process, there are innovative skills that can be applied and you can involve so many Educational Aids to go along with the curriculum.

About Classroom Management

This unit helped  me to know what are basic features of  the classroom management and useful methods  of  the creating a high quality and effective class. I have not many experience to manage a English class in primary school, I think that this work is very difficulty. If I ‘m going to teach English for a children class in the future, I don’t know that can I good work by my teaching. I’m sure, my teaching will change to be suitable with my different class and it isn’t the same things that I think about now.

As you know, there ‘re many important factors in the creating an effective learning environment. And in this unit, we have learned about the basic factors to good classroom management, they ‘re classroom rules, getting attention, getting attention, reward system, giving instructions, setting up group work, stirring and setting activities. These factors have a close and interactive relationship, because a English lesson may have  many  different activities, each activity has a different method to work  and manage and each person also has a own method. However, we only learn more, but also are active to good own method, our method cannot  be the same with the others  and they are suitable with our children and class.

I think that we must have some rule for both the teacher and children in the English class.

For example, some rules  may be suitable with children in the English class :

– Bring all needed materials to class.

– Have done homework and prepare new lesson before class.

– Listen and stay seated when someone is talking.

– Obey all school rules.

Some rules for the teacher:

– Don’t ask question with undersized answers on ultimatums.

– Don’t take it personal.

– Provide choice ,but all choices should be your choices.

– Check planner during quiet, seat work time.

-Say something positive to your class every day.

And instructional management include 3 main parts : planing, presenting new content clearly and checking for understanding. they  play  an important role in teaching English.

To sum up, motivating learning through successful classroom management  that is  intelligent associating all abilities, behaviors, understanding, skills,… together.

Classroom Management Techniques

To achieve effective lessons, it must have a combination of many factors such as teaching methods, students’ attitudes, teaching content.Especially, the learning environment is very important. There are many factors to create a positive learning environment:
– Students pay attention
– Listen to teacher and each other
– Understand what they have to do
– Respect each other and teacher
– Share things
– Stimulatingand motivating learning materials
– Students actively participate: work collaboratively and in co- operation; students are productively angaged
– Positive teacher/ students relationship: praise and encouragement from theteacher; emphasis on building self esteem and confidence; positive behaviour is valued.

The next factor is classroom management skills of teachers. The first step towards effective classroom management is to establish a solid foundation, based on rules and routines. Once this is established, the teacher can then set up and manage activities, using management techniques for getting on, giving effective instructions, setting up group work and maintaining attention and motivation.
Classroom rules set boundaries for children about what behaviour is and isn’t acceptable in class. Those boundaries make children feel secure and teach them important skills for working together and respecting both their teacher and each other. If the teacher involves the children in creating the classroom rules, they will feel more responsibility for and ownership of those rules.

In my opinion, a teacher should have some following classroom management techniques:

Respect: To get the respect of students, teachers should have a serious and fairness attitude in class for students.

Knowledge: Teachers should know their subject thoroughly. It’s not just enough to be prepared for each class; if teachers want to be taken seriously by their students and get students’respect, they must be thoroughly knowledgeable in their subject.

Individualization: Most classes are a mix of average and brilliant students, so it’s best to prepare lessons that cater to the average student. As a teacher who wants to manage your class effectively, you must know how to assess each class you handle and customize your lessons accordingly.

Time-management: The best teachers are poeple who made a class both entertaining and educative. They are able to teach students about the subject and make the class entertaining as well. When a class is interesting, there’s no difficulty in managing its students.

Patience: Teachers who manage their classrooms well must have patience. They don’t lose their cool when their students start acting up. It takes a great deal of patience to cope with a classroom full of students, some of who are bent on causing trouble with their mischievous antics. However, if you manage to adopt a cool attitude and show no frustration, it’s easy to regain control and continue with the lesson.

Creating a Positive Learning Environment

As a teacher, you of course need to establish general rules of conduct for your classroom such as raising hands, keeping thing tidy, sharing thing, being on time…. But how do you make your students want to follow the rules? Today, I give some advice for you about it:

  • Treat others as you would like to be treated.
  • Respect other people and their property.
  • Laugh with anyone, but laugh at no one
  • Be responsible for your own learning.
  • Come to class and hand in assignments on time.
  • Do not disturb people who are working.

Good classroom management creates the right condition for learning, leading to a positive learning environment and experience. What factors create a positive learning environment? Here are some factors:

  •  Students pay attention.
  •  Listen to teacher and each other.
  •  Understand what they have to do.
  •  Positive teacher / student relationship.
  •  Teacher should be friendly.

Classroom managment isnot easy.

To have a successfull class, a teacher has to not only has firm knowlege but also know how to manage classroom. But Classroom managment isnot easy. After the lesson i perceive some good ways to have many experiences in running the class. It’s focus on 10 main parts: Creating a positive learning enviroment, Approaches for good classroom management, Classroom rules, Classroom routines, Getting attention, Reward system, Giving instructions, Setting up group work, Stirring and settling activities and Main points and summary..

Firstly, creating a positive learning environment is very important. This helps children like to learn and your less is more effective. Teacher should be friendly, Ss will be more comfortale.Interaction between T and Ss  and between Ss and Ss in Pair work or Group work will make active learing environment. They can hel each other and try their best.

Secondly, setting up classrom rules will help management better. Each teacher should have clear rules to run the class. Ss will follow those rules to do them strictly.

Thirdly, T will have ways to get attention such as whistle, clap hands, …there are many techniques to get attention of Ss and change focus, it;s up to each teacher.

Finally, they are reward system. and giving instructions. T can use gesture, ask students and make instructions short. Giving instruction is so necessary to help Ss understan more easily.

Because chiildren are small, so management is so difficult. T has to apply evrery ways to  have a successful lesson.
