Brain research: How does feelings play an important role in children’s learning English?

There is an interesting idea from Brain based research that is “learning evolves feelings”. This idea really makes me think a lot and many questions appear in my mind. The first one is “Why does learning evolve feelings?”

To answer this question, let’s find out the reasons why children have to learn English. Obviously, children learn English because of their parents’ need or the requirement of education program. However, we rarely care for the reasons originated from children themselves. Many children want to learn English because they like it, they love their teacher or maybe they love cartoon using English. That means children want to learn English with their feelings. Children are not be able to aware of the importance of learning, therefore their learning mainly bases on their feelings. During the process of learning, if children feel interested in the content of lessons, the teaching way of teacher or activities and environment in class; they will study effectively. We might say that learning evolves feelings and feelings can motivate learning.

Being English teachers in the future, what should we do to make emotion for our children?
Firstly, boring lessons should be replaced by a variety of activities or tasks in which we can use 7 types of intelligence together because each child is suitable with one or more than one type of intelligence. For instance, we can combine story telling with music or pictures. Secondly, in the role of a teacher, we not only concern about the lesson but also our attitudes with children. It is equal and necessary if we give children compliments or reward them when they get high mark or positive in learning. On the contrary, children will be punished and got our advices when they makes mistake. The last solution mentioned is making learning environment for children. The most comfortable environment, the best effect children will get. Our duty is creating happy, funny or warm atmosphere in class to make children feel that they are not learning but playing with English.

  1. Hi, Lien. I am Luong.
Thank you very much for your sharing. After learning about Brain Based Research, I have known that experiences are very important for developing children brains. And experiences are created by emotions or strong feelings. Therefore, educational environment is the good place where children get experiences..I absolutely agree with you that using multiple intelligences test to build different activities, contributing toward a friendly and meaningful atmosphere for children to develop their learning language abilities, especially English. You raise their feelings up, it means you are motivating them and help them approach to language by the best ways, I think.
