Multiple Intelligences

After the first lesson of Primary English Language Teaching, I know and understand what Multiple Intelligences (MIs) are and how they important in teaching language to children. As I know, MIs were introduced by Howard Gardner in his 1983 book ” Frames of mind: The theory of Multiple Intelligences”.

According to Howard Gardner (1983), there are seven different types of intelligence reflecting different ways of interacting with the world: verbal – linguistic, logical – mathematical, spatial – visual, bodily – kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal intelligence. Firstly, verbal – linguistic intelligence. People who have verbal – linguistic intelligence are good at reading, writing, telling stories or memorizing words. Secondly, logical – mathematical. You are able to work with geometric shapes and analyze problems logically. Thirdly, if you can understand the visual world and respond well to it, you have ability to read, write, understand charts and graphs, you are spatial – visual intelligence. The next one is bodily – kinesthetic intelligence. It is the ability to control body’s movements. People who have this type of intelligence are good at sports, using body language, and expressing emotions through body. Fifthly, musical intelligence. It is the ability to hear and make sounds and rhythms in music. We can easily recognize it in singers, musicians or dancers. The next one is interpersonal intelligence, the ability to understand and discern the feelings of the others and respond well to it. Lastly, intrapersonal intelligence. It is the ability to understand our own feelings and motivations.

All these types of intelligence are very important in teaching language to students, especially students in Primary schools. If the teacher can understand all weaknesses and strengths of his students and apply well these types of intelligence, his class will certainly have good results of study. However, it is very difficult for them to get this. In my opinion, teacher has to test to know what type of intelligence his students is. After that, he has to find effective ways to teach students. If most of the students in a class have musical intelligence, teacher can use different activities related to music such as singing or writing songs. For verbal – linguistic intelligence students, teacher should use some memory games or some stories related to the lesson. For spatial – visual intelligence students, teacher can use some colorful flashcards or some pictures to teach new words, some kinds of charts to teach reading or writing skill. However, teachers can not use only one type of intelligence activities during a lesson. They have to combine different intelligence activities because each student has different types of intelligence.

In conclusion, MIs play a very important role in teaching language to students. Teachers have to apply MIs in effective methods to help students improve their intelligence.

  1. First, thanks for your sharing about multiple intelligents (MIs). I think it ‘s quite good. You gave name and some characteristics of multiple intelligences. Moreover, you also gave the way to using them in teaching language at primary schools. However, you should add an example after the last sentences of third paragraph.For example,to teaching new words about animals for students, teacher can use some pictures and use some activities to describe a aniaml. Therefore, teacher combined visual intelligence and bodily intelligence to teach new words for student. I think if you do it, your sharing will be more clearly.

  2. After reading your writing, I would like to give you some comments. First of all, I want to say thank you very much for your ideas that help me understand more about “Multiple Intelligences Test”
    I totally agree with you that there are seven types of different intelligences. Each kind of them has different expression. Through this kind of test teachers can know strong points and weak points of students. Then they can find out the best method in teaching young children. This will help students have good result in studying.
    However, I a little bit disagree with your opinion that “If most of students in a class has musical intelligence”. This is because we can find out the common intelligence for every student in a class. Each student has their strength and weakness, so teachers have to combine activities flexibly to catch students’ attention.

    First, thanks for you sharing. In general, I see it quite good. You gave names and some characteristics of multiple intelligences. Moreover, You also gave the way to using them in teaching languages for students at primary school. However, you should add an example after the last sentence in third paragraph. For example, to teach new words about animals for students, teachers can use pictures and activities to describe about this animals. Therefore, teachers combined visual intelligence with bodily intelligence. If you do that, I think your writing will be more clearly.
