I have experienced 2 lessons of ETP341 – a new subject focusing on teaching English to young learners. The subject includes all the issues relating to what is essential knowledge for teachers of English at primary school, the young learners’ basic physical and psychological characteristics and their needs, how to plan, design, develop and perform appropriate activities in the class to motivate the individual child, the methods and approaches to resolves all the problems appearing during the lessons, and so on.
In the first lesson, the content was mostly presented in kind of the overview of ETP341 and the analysis to point out the characteristics of the young learners and the mature ones, and the most impressive thing I got in the lesson is that the theory of multiple intelligences (MIs). In this section, MIs was defined in various aspects as well as in many different opinions. According to Howard Gardner, there are 7 intelligences: bodily/ kinesthetic, musical, verbal/ linguistic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, visual/ spatial, and logical/ mathematical intelligence. Each child has their own strength and weakness in one or more than one aspect. It means that children can reach achievement in particular field. As the teachers of language, it is necessary for us to realize how importance of children’s intelligences, what their strength is and what their weakness is so that the teacher can propose suitable methods and activities to motivate the young learners totally to learn English in an effective way.
In the second lesson, we came to the new aspect – brain research and learning. This section analyze how the brain grows and the meaning of brain to children’s growth to help them develop. The lesson focused on 4 main statements following. The first one is that experiences shape the brain. Learning language in primary school is based on imitation and seems to be the result of a summarized process. Positive experiences in learning can help children to impove themselves gradually; on the other hand, negative experiences bring the younng learners the lessons and the awareness of what difficulties they have ever got and how to avoid them. The second statement is that learning involves feelings. That is definitely correct. Learning well depends almost in the feelings of the learners. Obtaining the children’s emotional status, psychonological characteristics and their feelings in particular time is the optimal way for language teachers to propose suitable lessons with suitable activities in order that learning will reach the most effective results. The third one is that remembering is multiple-sensory. Remembering all the knowledge is not simple at all. It is a complicated process that learners need to make use of all the sense, for example, ears to listen teachers’ words, tape scripts; eyes to copy the lessons, watch videos; mouth to communicate; and so on. The last statement is that make sense is essential for learning. Understanding is a very important in learning process, that is the mutual understanding between the teachers and children. Teachers should know what children need, what they want, what they hope, etc, and children also need to recognize what teachers hope in them.
That is some of my comments and my feelings about the 2 previous lessons. ETP341 actually relates strictly to all issues of the young learners. And to have a good teaching methodologies for them, the language teacher should equip for themselves the knowledge of multiple aspects.
