Multiple Intelligences in the teaching foreign language to young learner

As you know, the basic need of a teacher is clearly understanding about learners. It consists of the needs, their family’s conditions, hobbies, psychological, intelligence and so on. At the moment, I study a subject, teaching English to young learners. At the beginning of this subject, I’d like to talk about advantage of Multiple Intelligences (MIs) in teaching foreign language to children.
Firstly, we have to understand what is MIs? According to Howard Gardner’s MIs, intelligence is the ability to create an effective product or offer a service that is valued in a culture, a set of skills they make it possible for a person to solve problem in life, and the potential for finding or creating solutions for problems, which involves gathering new knowledge. People have many abilities such as linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, spatial, bobily-kinaesthetic, intra-personal, and inter-personal. They are represented in the way of thinking, way of perform, language, and many others side in human’s life, particular in children.
Secondly, learning language needs intelligence about language side. Automatically, special verbal abilities are the main point in learning foreign language; it was define by science, Gardner and Lambert, 1972. If it is discovered as soon as possible, children would be easier to develop them. Therefore, teacher should give MIs test to find out this intelligence and have way to encourage its.
Finally, what I want to say here is not only verbal abilities but also the others above abilities, logical-mathematical, musical, spatial, bobily-kinaesthetic, intra-personal, and inter-personal. Young learners are person who have variety of imagination, active and very intelligence. Special abilities are different with each person. One person may have linguistic ability and music, but other not. However, they have others abilities such as logical-mathematical. In a class variety of intelligence ability, teacher needs to diversify teaching method and visual. For example, some learners have logical-mathematical, we use members to ask them practice language, but learners like music, we teach language by song. Furthermore, learners in a class have different learning habits and interests, so that changing in teaching method should be flexible.
In sum, with the roles of MIs above, I hope that parents and teachers have more understanding experience about needs and ways of development children. Basing on that, you can allow your students to safely explore and learn in many ways, and you can help students direct their own learning.

  1. Hi ty! Thanks for your writing that helps me understand more about the “Multiple Intelligences Test”. It is clear that your writing mentions about the different types of inteligences and their expression. Then you give some advices for teacher teaching for young children. Teacher should give this kind of test as soon as possible to find out students’intelligences and have way to encourage them. Moreover, learners in a class have their own strong points and weak points, so that changing in teaching methods should be flexible.
    However, I recognize that your introduction mentions about the advantages of “Multiple intelligences test”, but your content is not linked. This is my comment for your journal. Thanks for your reading!
