Nowadays, teachers of English in primary schools apply many methods (both old and new) to teach children. In many opinions, storytelling is considered as one of the most effective. Storytelling is an oral activity where language and gestures are used in a colourful way to create scenes in a sequence (Champion, 2003). Most of young learners are interested in listening story. They find it very funny and motivative. A story has many attractive details and some actions, which make children follow and understand easily.
Before telling a story, teachers should talk about the title, introduce some important parts. Also, they can show some pictures and ask students to answer the questions. They should try to help learners image and make acquainted with the story. In addition, vocabulary is very necessary. Teachers needs to teach vocabulary and give students time to read. The whole class read in chorus many times, they will acquire a lot of new words because in storytelling, repetition is very typical. From that, the young learners can follow the content of the story easily later.
While storytelling, it is essential to divide the whole story into small parts. It will be more funny and effective if the teachers require students to role play. Teachers can read one by one and learners take action as what tellers have said. For example, there is a cat in the story, a student will act as it, make sound “meo…meo…” and take all action. In my opinion, in these situations, students will feel more comfortable and highly enthusiastic to study. Moreover, it is very good way for them to learn vocabulary and language structures.
After telling the students a story, to help them remember the content, the teachers have many ways. For instance, teachers can show some pictures again and ask students to rearrange them into a right order. Also, can give some details and require learners to base on them, retell the story.
In summary, storytelling is a good method in teaching children language. It makes significant contributions to speaking and listening in building language skills.
