my thoughts about storytelling in PELT

Hi everyone!

I have a niece. She is in grade 4 of a primary school and she has learned English since last year. Last week, I went home and chatted to her about learning English. She told me she liked English and loved her teacher of English because of the teacher’s way in teaching. She said that in each lesson, all students always join in playing games and sometimes sing a song or play a small drama from fairy story. I’m very surprising and I feel the method the teacher uses in class is very important. Story telling is a necessary technique in teaching language for young learner.

As I know, story is an exciting attraction with children. story create  magic and sense of wonder in the world with beautiful life, nice emotion. Story will help a teacher a lot, it bring love naturally for children, teach them about the life, about themselves, about the others. Besides, storytelling is a unique way for students to develop an understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures, and can promote a positive attitude to people from different lands, races and religions.

Teaching also means promoting the interest for children in subject. If they love this subject, they will learn more and better. Storytelling is a way to promote a feeling of well-felling and relaxation. Children feel no unpressured and comfortable when they enjoy story, they have positive emotion, which helps them learn something more naturally. to present a story there are many ways that teacher can use easily in class for children such as: using pictures,  videos, relias,…When teacher tell story, the intonation how to tell the story, the questions they ask students are very important to help all  students focus on, take part in story. for instance, when telling a story using pictures, teacher should introduce characters, describe  places, something around in pictures for children and help them pronounce words, phrases. During telling story, teacher can suggest children what happens next or encourage them to give the ideas for pictures and add games for process of storytelling. All will bring an interesting story for children, that helps them memorize more and longer; words and phrases in story are also more impressive.

In conclusion, using story in teaching language has many benefits such as improving comprehension, practicing listening skill, encouraging self-expression, building self-confidence, and so on…If you are a primary teacher, you should take care of your children and tell a story in your interesting way that’s suitable for them to learn best.

That’s all I think about storytelling, I hope one day when I become a teacher I can bring nice stories for my children. 🙂

  1. Hi, Tram. First, I want to say thank you about your writing which is very useful.
You’re right “Story telling is a necessary technique in teaching language for young learner.” It is really a powerful teaching tool for every teacher. We can use this method in any part of a lesson such as warm up with many different purposes (reviewing last lesson, introducing new lesson, teaching vocabulary or grammar…)
Besides, I also see many advantages of using storytelling when teaching as you listed in this writing and I totally agree with your ideas. Yes, it improves comprehension, practices listening skill and encourages self-expression. If i have chance to be a primary school teacher, I will use this method to teach my children. I will tell many interesting stories for my students.
    Thanks you again.

  2. Hi Tram.!
After reading your writing, I see that you pay attention to the lesson in the class. You talk about your experience and what you learn from this lesson; specially, I like the way you tell about your niece. It is so realistic. Though your sharing, I can know more about the important of telling story when teaching children. It’s considered as a good way to promote the feeling and relaxation. Children feel no unpressured and comfortable when they enjoy story, they have positive emotion, which helps them learn something more naturally.
However, I want to add some points to your writing. Teacher should use pictures, prompts, real objects, or toys when telling story. Teacher should use different voices for different characters such as hen, cat, pig, and duck. For example, when miming as cat, we can use sound like meo, meo, meo. A duck with sound wap, wap,wap..
Specially, student can sit around in the ground or sit in circle’s group. It makes students easy listen, see pictures and enjoy in the story”. We also should sit anywhere as long as they feel most comfortable while studying. Therefore, it is not necessary to oblige them sit on benches and put their hands on desks because storytelling can be seen as a break time for both teacher and children. They play and perform together; they can act as character in the story.
Thanks for your sharing one more time and looking for your answer.
