benefits of using music in teaching language (HA THI THANH HUONG)

Have you ever heard who don’t like listening to music? The answer is “no”. In fact, music has the various functions in our life that we can’t recognize clearly. For example when we felt so tired or stressful, what did we do? Uh huh, according to some people, they would fall on sleep but others would turn on television and listen to music, it really made them more comfortable and relaxing. Thus, music has an important role in our life, I’m sure that everyone will have an own favored type of music for themselves. And me too, I like folk music. Absolutely, music is not only an entertaining tool but also an interesting tool for teaching languages (foreign languages), especially to kids.

Why can I say that? A simple reason is that music has rhythm, melody and tone so it is easy to put in your mind. It is not monotonous; it’s very sophisticated and flexibility.  Therefore, learning foreign languages (English), young learners pick up vocabulary, grammatical structures, and the rhythm of the language simply by doing what they already love to do…singing. Thus, most of the teacher often use music in classroom in the starter or finish part to motivate Ss in new lesson or to make a funny atmosphere at the beginning of lesson. And children really pay attention in lesson by singing, dance, laugh .., following songs. As a result, the quality of lesson is really effective and gets more success. Children also improve some skills as pronunciation, playing role, guessing meaning of words…listening skill, speaking skill especially, kids can remember new word deeply and clearly. Songs are a great way to teach new language to children even adults.

In addition, music can serve a variety of functions in your classroom, at home, or even in the car. Music can set a mood. Music can signal a transition from one activity to another (for both the teacher and the student). Music can be a bonding experience. To sum up, using music in teaching foreign languages is a good way to get a success in teaching; it is a bridge to connect people together. To understand without explain any more. Thus, teacher should apply this useful tool in classroom to make a success and efficiency lesson. Good luck!!!

  2. Very very good, Huong !
I agree that feeling comfortable in the new environment is of prime importance. I think this can be done by having the teacher teach songs in the languages of the students.
I like listening to music while studying. It makes me relax and comfortable. I think children also have the same feeling with me. I have ever taught English for my younger sister. As a result, she like study new words by listen the song related to the topic… That’s for fun

However, choosing a suitable song to teach English for Ss is not easy. I hope that you will have a good choice
And here are some tips for you when using music to teach language

1- Introduce an instrumental version first

2 – a vocabulary list ahead of time. Go over the words once before you introduce the song.

3- Choose the suitable song ( funny and easy to teach)
