Storytelling, a magic skill of an excellent teacher in primary school

Story has many benefits for kids and it really has the power with them, so storytelling is an effective tool to teaching language for children. It’s an important skill of an active teacher. Firstly, we can be easy to realize that storytelling is also used by parents because children love stories. Moreover, storytelling helps children much in communicating. Children really retain information when they learn through story. Stories always contain the moral meaning, and the children remember more of the message when it is expressed in the story. They can know more than words only in the story. This is the magical aspect of storytelling.
Besides, stories themselves have many chunks of language and the repetition of them in a story which can be used in teaching language. For example in the story “Goldilocks and the three bears”, there are some structures are repeated and changed a little bit after once such as “Someone’s been eating my porridge,”, “Someone’s been sitting in my chair,”, “Someone’s been sleeping in my bed,”. By the repeating, they can learn this structure naturally. The stories is also the great source of vocabulary and also a great teaching aid as the children can learn the new words in the context.
The content of the stories are very simple and common. Children can be easy to guess the circumstances of the story. Thus they can learn the structure easier. Furthermore, storytelling is the best opportunity for students to practice listening skill because children tend to talk more than just listen, but in storytelling section, they do it.

There were some ways for teachers to tell story more attractively that I collected in the lesson is that teachers should give students the chances to take part in the story by having some pauses on telling, or using our gestures to signal students to join in, asking questions like How do you feel? What do you think when you are in this situation? Etc. The questions like that can help student to imagine and have an experience, and also get students involved.

Your body language is the other important one. It makes the story more vividly which most attracts the students because they can imitate those actions or sounds. As a story teller, you should use your body language exactly to convey the ideas and help students to get the message.

Perfect storytelling also needs to have students’ practicing. After listening, they should have chance to act out the story, or retell it by their own. It makes them more creative and dynamic in their thoughts and also their actions.

Storytelling is the best way to teach values and life lessons, the language knowledge either. So, try to make use of it in teaching language for children.

Pets – an interesting song for young learners to sing !!!

“Taare Zameen Par”

The film talks about a young boy named Ishaan Awasthi. He has the difficulty in reading and spelling but has talent of art. Nevertheless, his father did not know this problem; he always thought that Ishaan’s bad result is from his laziness and compared Ishaan with his brother. This make him feel dispirited. That the life at boarding school after his father decided to send him to the school give the dispiriting to the highest degree. Luckily, teacher Aamin Khan realized his problem and helped him to overcome…

This is the film of India but I see that there are many similarities with Vietnam. Especially, the meaning of the film is not only for the Indian but also for many other countries.

1, Parents should not compare their children with the other. Not all kids are similar. Each people have their own ability. Parent cannot force their children to be similar with the others. It can be true that the comparisons can create motivation for them to strive but if compared too much, it will become the pressure. It will make kids feel that they are not as good as the others, decline or lose their confidence.

2, Parents should give their children the opportunities to develop their ability and dream. Parents always want their kids to follow their requirements and needs. They want kid to learn this subject, play that musical instrument and want them to get the jobs that parents want. In the film, although Ishaan has talent of art, his father wants him to become businessperson, teacher or doctor. He did not take notice of talent as well as ability of his son. Therefore, instead of forcing the kids to do whatever parents want, they should give them the conditions to develop the ability.

3, In teaching process, teacher should not apply a teaching and learning method for all students. Each student has different strengths and weakness. Teacher should combine variety activities or methods in teaching process to promote strengths and limit weakness as well as balance ability of students.

Moreover, teacher should define the reason of the student’s bad results and give the suitable solutions. Teacher can help them overcome the difficulty, improve the study, etc. Especially, teacher should not criticize the bad result in front of the class, it will make the student fell ashamed, dispirited and be kept away from their friends.

In conclusion, the film has the educational meanings to the people, especially children, parent and teachers. Each people can draw lesson for own from the film.

Using songs in teaching English for children.

As you know music has many many advantages in our life. Music also make an interesting and comfortable atmosphere in anywhere if you want to use it a good way. Moreover, teaching English through songs is one of the best method that the children focus on the lesson better. Because in a song has the variety new words and phrases with many different themes, so the children can learn some items of vocabulary, rhym of language, and grammatical structures that relating to any topic.
The fact that English songs for the children are often easy and simple topic that they like most to learn and the chidren will learn song by hearing it many times, maybe memorization occurs via repetition.
In addition, using songs in teaching English is the great way to teach language for children who can not understand fully all the lyric but they still listen to music and sing follow their teacher or music because they are very interesting. However, the teacher should not forget the main purpose that using songs in teaching English is only the tool in order to aim the children in lesson.
If the teacher only use songs to teach and do not require that the children should use any action in class; then the children will be tired and dispirited. Therefore, there are active and comfortable atmosphere by some activities through songs, the chidren take the initiative more. The teacher can divide the class into some suitable groups and exchange if necessary. They can sing or dance with many different ways that help them find out new words and remember this new words easily and quickly. The teacher also have to introduce clearly and use the simple gestures or body language which the children can understand to do immediately. These activities are very interesting.
In short, I hope that using songs will be good way for children to learn English and is very effective. Teachers should choose suitable songs and create various activities to help students learn actively.

what I have learnt from “Taare Zameen Par”

The first thing I must say that thank you very much,  Mr. Huy. Why I say that because of the meaningful film you suggested us. I think it is worth to see this film “Taare Zameen Par” or another name is “Like Stars On Earh”. The title of the film firstly impresses me very much. That’s really an interesting film that teachers, parents and also teacher-trainees like us should watch and contemplate.

Every one has their own talent. Each of us is like a star in the sky. One is bright at this time and another becomes shinning at that time as well as one is good at math and another performs well with linguistics. The boy-Issac, a special boy- who is talented of art but no one at first can not realize that qualification. Parents are  not only mother and father but also become  close friends with children. They should stand by him, plan a goal for him but always encourage him to develop his talent. However, Issac in the film has to endure the depressiveness from his parents. They all want him to be like his older brother. They forget the pictures he made to focus on the purposes they set for him and force him to accomplish them. Under the pressure, he becomes a boy who doesn’t want to talk with parents and can not get along with his friends. At school, he has to suffer from classmates’ unfriendly look. He doesn’t have any close friend in his class. Teacher becomes disappointed at him because of his bad results of every test and exam. After a series of troubles, his parents decide to send him to a far boarding school. He falls himself down into hopelessness about his parents’ decision. He has to try the best to overcome each test but the result isn’t  not only improved but also he becomes a selfishness boy. A new art teacher comes to this school, tries to help him back up his interest in learning and other people due to the aim of developing his ability in art. He doesn’t consider Issac as mental handicapped person as his parents’. He tries to become his friend and by his loving and caring attitude, he already saves a life. He discovers special abilities in a disable-like-person. After the film, we understand the role of parents in educating children is very important. They should be close with their children to develop their strengths in spite of it can not be seen at first. Adopted the film, we can see the relationship between parents and school is really necessary in learning orientation for children. Honestly, I and many people, I’m sure, cried after seeing this film and understand what we should do in the future.

How to teach songs for kid? _Nguyen Thi Thuy Van

Music is a great tool to use in the classroom for young learners who are developing language skills, but what is the best way to introduce a new song to children?

Before you can teach a song, you as the leader must know it. Listen to it over and over until you can sing the song spontaneously. As leader, you want to enjoy yourself as enthusiasm spreads! Even if you don’t have musical talent, you can teach a new song!
Provide opportunities for the boys and girls to hear the song before singing. The music can be playing in the background as children arrive, while engaging in craft activities, and also during snack time.
Children learn a song by hearing it many times, as memorization occurs via repetition. Knowing a song by heart, so the melody and lyrics will stay with children forever, is the goal.
Before actually singing the song together, ask questions. Be sure boys and girls know the song’s meaning and also the significance of unfamiliar words.

Some songs have more of a story to them and can be difficult to teach by gesture alone. For these, you can teach the song with visual aids. For example, classic rhymes/stories like “Five Little Monkeys,” “Ten in the Bed,” “The Wheels On The Bus,” or “Old McDonald” all have many picture book versions available. Read the storybook first so that students understand what is happening when you sing the song. As you read the storybook, you can sing some of the words to introduce the melody of the song. After reading the book, try doing a simple craft or coloring page related to the book as you play the song in the background. Then sing the song and have the students follow along with the gestures.

As the kids grow older, you don’t want to repeat songs as much. Students will have their favorites that they like to sing many times, but you won’t be repeating songs every week like we do with the younger learners. So, you’ll need to build more exposure to the song into one or two lessons, and then go back to it every once in a while for review. I have some thoughts on teaching songs to elementary school students.

” Taare Zameen Par”_Nguyen thi Thuy Van

“TAARE ZAMEEN PAR” is an impressive film which i will never forget it. After seeing this film, i have just learnt many useful lesson about teaching.
This film talk mainly around a boy – 8 years old named Ishaan Awasthi. He is a special boy because he is very intelligent and he has a different way of looking the world with other children. However, Ishaan has difficult in identify words, number, size and getting knowledge. He also can not wear dress, tie the shoelaces or any things which other children can do easily. Almost teachers complains about his learning exam at school. This make his father so angry. Finaly, his father decided to take him to the boarding school and he met new art teacher named Nikumbh. He discovered the Ishaan Awasthi ’s problems and helped him to overcome his difficulty. Although “TAARE ZAMEEN PAR” is an Indian film but it also includes the same feature as Vietnamese education.
This film only take more than 2 hours, but it partly portrayed the Indian educational picture where teachers absolutely don’t concern about problems of students, they force students to do what they want as well as use penalties when students make the mistakes. Students don’t have any chances to discover the world around them or create by their thought. In the film, Ishaan Awasthi is a boy who is consider as a stupid, dull- witted child. He always is bullied because of his obtuse. The boy becomes isolated and alone at school and even in his family. No one understands him, they only scold, berate the lamentable boy. But I found out that Ishaan Awasthi have interesting insight about things around him and special ability inside his stupid appearance. Because of rigid education system, Ishaan are really depressed and injured.

In teaching English, we teach not only in class but also in school yard or near the lake. Then indicate a tree, a duck,  a house, a cloud, a sun, a flower, a spider, so on and give the question “ What’s this?”, “ What’s that?” “ how’s the weather?” these are lively teaching’s aids. NiKumbh’s methods help students to memory well and create many things, for example Inu make a plane running on the lake. So intelligent!
Beside, teacher act the jester in a play, play flute or instruments, and sing a simple, happy song. These things make students close to teachers and love the lesson. “ Education for creative life” I think this is the slogan of Nikumbh teacher. He do not request these students have to do what teacher give. In color lesson, students can draw, paint the picture which they like.

It is the same situation in Vietnam education. The way teachers teach their students is traditional methods. Teachers always think that students compete together and then this will make their future. There isn’t exist one thing which called logical thinking. Everything that children learn is rote learning. For students who have difficulties in getting knowledge, they will receive punishment from teacher, parents.  But in fact each child has their own ability, sooner or later they will discover. Do not force your adult ambitions to their weak shoulders.
Thus, the children development depend on many things includes the relationships parents and children; teacher and children; children and children; parents and teacher. We have to connect all the relationship suitably to avoid hurt to soul of the children.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT_Nguyen Thi Thuy Van

Classroom management is one of the most important roles played by teachers because it decides the success of teaching and learning. Students in classes where effective management techniques  are used have higher achievement than those in classes where effective management techniques are not taken on. So, how to achieve effective classroom management? In this writing, I would to share some of my opinions about the ways to manage classroom effectively.
To achieve effective lessons, it must have a combination of many factors such as teaching methods, students’ attitudes, teaching content. Especially, the learning environment is very important. There are many factors to create a positive learning environment:
– Share things
– Students actively participate: work collaboratively and in co- operation; students are productively angaged
– Listen to teacher and each other
– Respect each other and teacher
– Stimulating and motivating learning materials
– Students pay attention
– Understand what they have to do
– Positive teacher/ students relationship: praise and encouragement from theteacher; emphasis on building self esteem and confidence; positive behaviour is valued.

The next factor is classroom management skills of teachers. As a teacher, you of course need to establish general rules of conduct for your classroom such as raising hands, keeping thing tidy, sharing thing, being on time…. But how do you make your students want to follow the rules? Today, I give some advice for you about it:
– Treat others as you would like to be treated.
– Respect other people and their property.
– Laugh with anyone, but laugh at no one
– Be responsible for your own learning.
– Come to class and hand in assignments on time

In short, the teacher wants to teach language effectively, he has to have patience, enthusiasm and fan the flame of children’s creativity.
