re-post, multiple intelligences ( MIs)

Before learning the lesson 1 of Primary Training Course, I have no definition of what MIs are. I only think that when we are good at any field, it means that we are intelligent. Of course, after the 1st lesson I knew something about it, especially, about multiple intelligences. Basing on the lesson, I know that everyone has their own intelligences, dislikes each other. MIs are also the base to access students and teacher can use them as tools to discover and develop students’ abilities with suitable fields.

According to Gardner’s theory, MIs are “the capacity to solve problems or to fashion products that are valued in one or more cultural setting” (Gardner & Hatch, 1989). MIs include seven intelligences: verbal/ linguistic, logical/ mathematical, spatial/ visual, bodily- kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence. In the first type, they are people who are good at presenting, speaking. They are sensitive with words and flexible in using language. This group of people may be good at listening, story telling, analysis..

In the 2nd type- logical/ mathematic intelligence, this group have trendy to be good at calculating and number. They are sensitive with exact number. This group are good at solving problems and classification, working with mathematic.. Spatial/ visual group includes people who understand visual words very well. These people are usually good at reading, writing, using charts, painting, designing.

The next type is bodily- kinesthetic intelligence. This group consists of people who can control the body and use their postures to express. These people are usually interested in fields of art such as dancing, sports..or using body language, expressing through emotions, postures. The next one is musical intelligence. People who can hear and make sounds and rhythm in music, belong to this group. They can surely sing, play musical instruments, compose, remember melodies…

The 6th type is interpersonal intelligence. They are people who can be sensitive to feeling of others and responding well. They can see things from other perspectives, listening, using both verbal and non- verbal communication. The last one is intrapersonal intelligence. This group consists of people who can understand their own feelings and control their behavior.

In conclusion, each people have his own intelligence, one or more than one. This thing can be your strength but it is my weakness. The important thing is that we have to find out what is our strengths and weaknesses to develop them. Teachers can use many ways to know what type of intelligences that students belong to and develop them.

  1. Hi, nhung. Thank you for your sharing. This writing is very useful and fully about theory of Mutiple Intelligences. You showed detail about seven kinds of MIS and these features. In my opinion, if you add more examples for each kind of MIS, this writing will be perfect. This is my ideas about your writing.

  2. Thanks for your sharing, nhung !
I have the same opinion with you about some main types of MIS.
However, i think that you should give more examples for each kind of MIS and talk about ” How to apply this theory in teaching English for chilren.
As you know, each child has their own kinds of MIS. Therefore, you should reliaze the status of each student to help them find out the effective way to studying English. For example, if most of your students has bodily intelligence, you should design many activities which related to use body language, for example : dancing, etc…

    Thanks for your writing again.
    Have a nice day!

  3. Hi Nhung, what an usefull and interesting sharing! In my opinion, you have give us a clear view about multiple intelligences. There are many good points. I agree with Xuyen’s ideas that you should give more examples for each point to make it more clearly. I want to know more about your experiences about this topic. For example, you can tell us about yourself, and what you wil do to improve and develop your intelligences. In learning and teaching language process, what should we do to discover and develop young learners’ abilities? If you can give more detail ideas, I think that it will be better. Wish you have a nice time!

  4. Dear my friend,
Firstly, I want to say that thank you for your writing. It helps me know clearly about 7 types of Multiple Intelligences. There are many good points, but I think that you should add some more examples as well as applications of them in teaching English. As you know, each person has their own ability so teacher have to use suitable ways to find out the most strong point of students. This helps them develop in the right method. For example, student A is good at Maths; therefore he should spend much time on learning natural science subjects. Student B is good at drawing so the teacher teaches the content relevant to color, shapes, etc. I think if you give more examples and detail ideas about multiple intelligence, your writing will be better. This is my opinion. Thanks for your sharing again. Have a nice day!

  5. Hi Nhung,

I see 7 types multiple intelligences in your writing and know generally about them. I think you should give example for each type multiple intelligence because it will make your post more clear and persuade readers.

  6. thanks for your sharing about multiple intelligences ( MIs)
i have the same ideas with you about this aspect
you explained about 6 types of MIs. i think it rather detailed and clear. however i think you should give more examples to demonstrate for each type because 6 types you include is theory, and how we recognize them in each situation of children is not easy. you know children’ intelligences are variety. some have one, but some have more than like you said “each people have his own intelligence, one or more than one” and “The important thing is that we have to find out what is our strengths and weaknesses to develop them”. and may be you can image you are a teacher and you share the ideas that how do you do to recognize and develope children’ intelligences.
    once again, thanks so much
