Classroom management

There were many researches showed that classroom management is a crucial factor that effect on students’ learning. Effective classroom management prepares for the class with effective instruction which is important in learning process, helpful for students’ acquisition. The term classroom management was commonly defined as the actions and strategies of the teachers in the class to keep the order (Doyle, 1986). Nowadays, this concept was defined broader. It refers to the learning, students’ behaviors, and the social interaction in the classroom, includes person, instruction, and discipline (Martin & Baldwin, 1992).
Over the time, we now suppose for the students-centered orientation instead of teacher-centered in the past. However, we can not deny the important role of a teacher in the classroom. Teachers are the leaders who create the activities, give the instruction to help students get the knowledge. Teachers, especially primary school teachers, play an important role in managing the students’ behavior, dealing with students’ misbehavior, and giving the positive learning environment. Classroom management supports for the effective and efficient instruction which is the greatest tool of teaching and also learning.
As a teacher, we should be aware of some effective classroom management methods to get the best achievement. However, all management strategies are not effective for every teacher; teachers therefore have to try different strategies to see if they work for you. There were some principles for successful classroom management below to concern:
– Creating suitable rules to manage students’ behavior, this is the best supporting for teacher, but how to apply it to student?
• let students remember them one by one;
• keep repeating in every lesson;
• make it short and simple;
• make only 3-5 rules;
– Planning for students to be always on-task, even on dealing with disruptive behaviors. It means creating the over-learned plan to keep the classroom always on learning activities.
– Teachers should:
• Focus attention on entire class
• Don’t talk over student chatter, be silent for s while if necessary.
• Use softer voice or give students non-verbal cues so students really have to listen to what you’re saying
• Direct your instruction so that students know what is going to happen
• Monitor groups of students to check progress
• Move around the room so students have to pay attention more readily
• Make sure classroom is comfortable and safe
• Come to class prepared
• Show confidence in your teaching

Classroom Management

The term “Classroom management” is used by teachers. This is process that teachers ensure lessons work smoothly in spite of students’ disruptive behavior. Classroom management is one of factors that have effect on the success of learning and teaching process. So, what teacher should do to make classroom management effective?

Firstly, imposing rules is really necessary for teachers to manage students in classroom. Teachers should use the simple phrases or short sentences to help students to remember rules easily. An important thing is that rules of classroom management are based on the unity between teachers and students. Teachers have to explain and make students aware the importance of rules in classroom. Students feel comfortable when using the rules so they will follow rules consciously. In addition, teachers should stick table of rules on wall but make change to it to hold students’ attention. It is sure that table of rules must be clear, large, attractive enough for all of the students in classroom to see easily. Importantly, rules of classroom have to be suitable to students and they can apply these rules outside class.

Secondly, it is important for teachers to use a variety of activities in classroom. Multiple activities create a positive atmosphere and helps teachers to manage students effectively as well. Teachers can let students take part in a game, sing the song or even teachers tell a funny story to stir classroom’s atmosphere when students are too silent and sleepy. On the contrary, if students do not concentrate on their lesson and make the noise, teachers can use some solutions to attract students’ attention. For example: using body language such as clapping hands, waving hands; using some instrument such as drum, whistle… Sometimes, teachers do not have enough time to teach a full lesson. In fact, an effective or ineffective lesson is related to teachers’ classroom management. Teachers have to organize and create classroom activities that can stir or settle classroom’s atmosphere. Besides, teachers should combine activities to motivate and take control of students more effectively.

To sum up, classroom management is an important factor in teachers’ teaching, so teachers should manage students carefully to have a better lesson.

Some ways to manage classroom

In order to teach English effectively, teachers have to not only teach knowledge but also manage all students’ activities. When they manage well, they will create a positive learning environment. In which, students always pay attention on the lesson; they respect each other and the teacher and they understand what they have to do. However, how can teachers create this environment?

Firstly, teachers have to build clear rules at the beginning of the school year. It is better to establish no more than 10 rules. They are about what behavior is and is not acceptable in class. For examples, rules are raising hands, coming to class on time, don’t speak when someone is talking; tidying up at the end of class and so on. These rules help students to establish good habits in class and in life.

Secondly, teachers establish and manage group work well to get the most out of collaborative activity. They can divide class in to some small groups, each group has 3 to 5 people.  In group, students focus on the main content. They discuss to get the main points, compare and contrast something. Teachers become observers. They are easy to manage the class.

Thirdly, teachers give instructions simply and understandably. They should use gestures to reinforce points and do steps by steps. They can check understanding by asking 1 student to do the task as a model.

Fourthly, teachers get attention by clapping hands, singing songs or making special sounds. These ways keep students busy so they can’t talk or do anything else except following teachers’ instructions.

Finally, teachers set up stirring and settling activity suitably. Stirring activities create a lot of activities. They can be song with actions, passing flashcards and asking a question in English. Settling activities calm the children down. They can be coloring in pictures, writing tasks.

To sum up, teachers should choose suitable activities to attract students’ attention in class. Besides,  they have to be friendly and flexible in class.

 

 

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Classroom management is one of the most important roles played by teachers because it decides the success of teaching and learning. Students in classes where effective management techniques  are used have higher achievement than those in classes where effective management techniques are not taken on. So, how to achieve effective classroom management? In this writing, I would to share some of my opinions about the ways to manage classroom effectively.

Firstly, it is necessary to make different rules in classroom. Rules must be created by both teacher and students, so that students can follow rules easily and correctly. When making rules, teacher have to use single words or simple phrases to help children easy to read and understand. It is not recognize to use complete sentences in creating classroom rules. Moreover, poster or table of rules should be decorated by colorful images or cards which are related to the rules. It is because children always like different colors.

Secondly, classroom management will be effective if teacher success in getting students’ attention. This is because getting attention of a large number of noisy students is always a challenge for the teacher. There are many ways to get students’ attention. Teacher can use both gestures and postures. For example, teacher can lap hands, wave hands or stomp feet to gain attention when students make noise. In addition, teacher should hold different funny activities. For instance, using short songs or chants as the signal of changing activities.

Lastly, creating learning environment is one of the most important aspects of gaining effective classroom management.  Learning environment is very important in classroom, especial in teaching language. To get positive learning environment in classroom, teacher and students are considered as the most important aspect. It is required to get both teacher and students’ attention. Students have to listen to the Teacher and the others in the class. Teacher has to create many activities for students to make them concentrate on the lesson. Activities must be funny, but educated and related to the lesson.

In conclusion, classroom management is very important in the class. Therefore, teacher have to find different ways to manage and control the class effectively.

This film main_image-34479made a strong impression on me and I cried a lot, cried for a child’s feeling, Ishaan, when he was forced to study far from his home and cried for his happiness when he found himself. Nikumbh, a wonderful teacher made me think a lot about how to teach students well like him. The first thing that I can see is enthusiasm and patience of a teacher. In term of teaching knowledge for children, a teacher not only go to the class and convey all knowledge in that lesson but also find out the way to make students catch the knowledge easily. Teacher is a person who helps children thinks that the school is a useful playground rather than the hell. Each of students has their own difficulties in learning and it is teacher who finds out those difficulties to change teaching methods suitably. Children cannot live and study in a stressful environment, when working with them, the teacher should be calm down, talk softly with them to understand what they are thinking. Understanding children, the teacher can help them stand out.

The second thing is that the teacher must fan the flame of children’s creativity and not extinguish it. Children learn language through imitation; however, the teacher cannot see them as a machine. In this film, a student asked in the art lesson: “teacher, what will we draw? There is nothing on the table” and the teacher answered “this table is too small to hold your wonderful imagination world”. You can easily see that children were trained as obey robots because the teacher did not put anything on the table, they did not draw. Normally, teachers ask students to follow their requests; if students cannot respond, they will be thrown out of the race. In this development stage, the creative ability of children is unlimited; therefore, teachers have to create an environment that students can be free to create even it can be wrong and then teachers will help them correct mistakes. Teachers shouldn’t force students so much because they will get stress on their learning.

In short, the teacher wants to teach language effectively, he has to have patience, enthusiasm and fan the flame of children’s creativity.

      One of the daunting challenges that face up newly fledged teachers is classroom management issues. Not every teacher is lucky enough to get the wheel turning smoothly right from the start. Disruptive behavior can pose a real threat to the learning and teaching process. Therefore, today I will give you 10 tips in classroom management for teachers.

1.    Build clear rules at the beginning of the year

Many teachers make the mistake of starting the school year without a good classroom rule. It will create the bad habit for students and they will feel very difficult to change. Building clear rules at the beginning of the year can help students quickly assess the situation and realize what they will be allowed to do. It also helps the teachers control the class flexibility.

Moreover, teachers should discuss with Students to give classroom rules that are short, clear, interesting and easy to remember and then decide what the consequences will be for breaking those rules.  The rules should be checked every day

2.    Teach highly detailed routines for every repeatable moment.

Well-taught routines make everything for the teacher easier, save loads of learning time, dramatically cut down on misbehavior, and help students stay focused on what’s important.

Begin the first day of school modeling every repeatable moment of your school day. Show your students explicitly, step-by-tiny-step, how to enter the classroom in the morning, how to ask a question, how to turn in work, and how to perform every other routine that make up the common movements and transitions of your classroom.

3.    establish and manage pair and group work activities for children effectively

Group work is one of the strategies that promote participation and interaction. It fosters a deeper and more active learning process. It also makes student work easier. Thanks to group work and pair work, students can share the ideas with their partners. For instructors, group work can save some preparation time. ( advantages)

However, working in group can make students  lazy. Some students may depend on others. Furthermore, it’s not easy to distribute the work. (disvantages)

Now, I will tell you some strategies to design group work effectively

+ Learning objective:

In groups, students can summarize main points, do warm up activities, compare and contrast knowledge, ideas, or theories

+ Form groups:

There are 4 main ways: randomly, teacher-selected, by seat proximity, or student-selected. Make sure that students interact with different classmates throughout the semester.

+Group Size and Duration

Group size can vary. Pairing is great for thirty-second or one-minute problem solving. Groups that work together for 5 to 15 minutes might be from 3 to 7 people.

In large groups it is useful to assign roles within each group (examples: leader,  recorder, reporter to the class, etc..).

4.    Be fair to all students

Unfairness can breed resentment and hostility in children. Treat all children without partiality and make sure all children feel comfortable. According a nearly survey, children of all ages rate ” fairness” as one of the most desirable qualities in a teacher

 

5.    Be Humorous

This does not mean that teachers try to become a comedian, but simply that they are introduced humor into teaching material where suitable.

6.     Incentivize good behavior

Motivating students though rewards like watching a video, ice cream, or free-activity time can help students by giving them a goal.  This can also help students hold each other accountable to class goals and stigmatize negative behavior even more.

Always understand that young students are not adults, but they will feel empowered and motivated that they possess independence and individuality in the classroom, which can provide lessons and skills that will benefit them well after they have left your class.

7.    Focus on relationships.

A teacher than can connect positively with their students will make students behave and easier to manage because students will regard the teacher much like a friend.  Using positive reinforcement to build a positive reputation for the child gives the student confidence that their teacher believes in them and will make it harder to disappoint the teacher with bad behavior or work ethic.

To sum up, classroom management is very important in teaching English for students. It is an ongoing process, but once the foundation is laid, it only takes occasional reminders. We should change and use the useful classroom managements to get a high result.

Being a teacher of English in the future, especially a primary teacher, I think you should equip yourselves skills in classroom management. Children are easily distracted by many things around the class, therefore teachers should focus on this characteristic to give classroom rules, to keep their attentions and control them into various activities that teachers want following pedagogical aim of the lesson.

Firstly, according to Linse, the most important strategy to manage classroom is building clear rules at the beginning of the year. Actually, teachers should give classroom rules that are short, clear, and easy to remember and these rules should be checked every day.  The rules help students not only have good attitudes in the class but also express results of those attitudes in the society.

Secondly, we need to know how to establish and manage pair and group work activities for children effectively, especially in a large class. Working in group gives children more chances to share their ideas, express themselves and improve their speaking and listening skills. Moreover, it creates a friendly environment which not only makes children more active but also helps children learn the way to cooperative with other members in group. There are 3 things that teachers must think about when teachers want their students to work in group. The first thing is what is the purpose of the task and after determining the purpose following the overall curriculum goals, teacher can decide what activity should be done. The second thing is teachers have to base on levels of students and equipments that provide for learning. Understanding about these, teachers will know how to organize and manage group work activities of students. The last factor is group size. From the first and second thing, the last decision teachers have to make to ensure that students work effectively is how many students in a group, 2, 3, 4 or more than 10 members. The number of students in a group has to depend on the activity and the purpose of the lesson. Below are steps to carry out group work activity:

–          Give the task.

–          Divide students into small groups.

–          Give instruction

–          Listen to students’ results and give feedback.

Thirdly, an important aspect in classroom management skills is getting students’ attention. In the class, children are often distracted by many factors like sounds, images, or actions…Therefore, teachers can use images or songs, rhythms or chants to get students’ attention. In addition, using body language is also one of the good ways to get and keep the attention. Teachers are good models who use gestures, postures, facial expression. It is teachers who make students busy with activities, so they have no time to do other things.

In short, there are many ways in classroom management. You are a teacher; therefore, you should find the best way to manage your class, not only motivate students but also help students focus on the lesson and complete curriculum goals.

When learning a lesson of classroom management, I have wondered that why teachers need to manage classroom and how to manage? And maybe, there are great deals of different points of view for question. In fact, a lesson can be effective or not, depending a lot of on controlling classroom of teacher, because if teacher manage well, students can pay attention in lesson without doing other, so teacher can complete lesson without lacking of time .And most of the teachers often make some rules as obligation in classroom which compel students in classroom doing such as: listening ears without free speaking in class, raising your hand when sharing your ideas, no making sound in class, thinking about what you want to say, sitting in your seat unless you have permission to leave, don’t fall in sleep in class, don’t eat or smoke anything in class, ….

Teacher can hang posters or picture to describe for rules in class, it’s sure that most of the students can be easy to see, and learn by heart quickly. It must be large enough, clear and short enough. Especially, this rules are suitable for students, I mean it must be useful and practical for student.

Moreover, I think that teacher should give rules in the first day and have policies of suitable complements and punishes. If someone get troubles with rules teacher can punish strictly to avoid another people. J this is some ideas about the way to manage classroom of teacher, I hope that it is useful for all. Classroom management is an important skill for each teacher in language teaching.  Without it, students are more likely to become distracted or disruptive to other students (themselves). When students do not focus on the lesson they are not learning. So teacher needs to have classroom management skill.

Classroom management includes:

  • Positive environment.
  • Routines.
  • Classroom rules.
  • Giving instructions.
  • Getting attention.
  • Setting up group work.

An important thing of classroom management is to create a positive learning environment. Fundamental to creating such an atmosphere is to make learners feel secure. In order to create a positive learning environment, teacher has to know what the learner what the learner want to do? And what the learner thinks?

Teacher have to create friendly atmosphere and many activities, teacher have to respect the learner. Teacher have an important role in classroom management.

According to Scott and Ytreberg, 1990. In order to create a positive atmosphere,the teacher does not allow students to laugh when someone makes a mistake.the  teacher gives learners responsibilities in the classroom: arranging furniture, putting things away…and teacher avoid organizing competition as it leads to winners and losers.

In conclusion, after learning the classroom management lesson I realize that classroom management  is an important skill to each teacher.the teacher should create vary activities to hold the learner’s attention. So the learners will feel comfortable and secure and they focus on the lesson.
