Brain-based research and education for children

Brain-based research is very important with education. It helps educators have suitable goals to provide children the best education environment where they can develop completely. So how should it be and how do they connect together? It will be followed in my brief way.
The first one is that we should create for children a conductive environment to learn well. Learning environment is very important with children. It enhances students to the lesson and that make them remember more easily and longer. Adults, who have the ability of controlling our emotions, but sometimes we still feel bored of what we have to do. We feel like there was no energy, no inspiration for anything. That why we should help children to be in the mood of learning. To do that, teachers have to create the “safe climate” for students. Because if they feel scared or nervous, their brains will detect them of launching their source of information, both input and output. We can not control definitely their emotions, but we can help them to be calm and good at manage their emotions. By making up a friendly and comfortable environment in the classroom goes along with the enthusiastic help of teachers and parents, we can be successful.
The second one I want to share is learning through doing activities and real experiences. Some recent researches showed that the physical activities can raise the power for the children’s brain. When people exercise, their hearts will be effected. It leads to increase the oxygen in blood flowing to the brain, which makes the students be more concentrated. Moreover, children are very interested in discovering themselves and the world around them. Therefore, we should have the activities that give them the opportunities to feel the world by their own hands, eyes, ears,.etc. It also help them remember the knowledge faster and retain it longer. It is essential to let children to access with many visual aids and media as well as the real visit to the nature. They will be interacted with objects and others people, which can increase their ability of communication.
In conclusion, the learning of a children has the close relationship with their brain developing. By understanding clearly the characteristics of their brain, we can equip for children the best with the suitable techniques and strategies which best help them develop naturally and easily.
There were many fields in brain-based learning research we have to be aware of. It’s just a small part from my point of view. I hope to have more your ideas and comments. Thanks!

Phonics – Learning Box UK (Phonics – LBUK)

From the need to change English teaching method, Phonics – LBUK has been applied in English primary curriculum in Vietnam. In reality, at present, this is advanced program which has brought positive results in applied countries. How is this method carried out?

Phonics – LBUK emphasizes on pronunciation, it means teaching English by how to spell each sound in the word, the same pronunciation in Vietnamese. As the results, students can pronounce English well, speak fluently and naturally.

There are three main advantages of this method:

Firstly, it helps students pronounce English well.

Secondly, it helps students recognize the words well.

Thirdly, students can develop many skills after learning Phonics.

Are these above advantages true? We will consider it together.

This curriculum includes 6 levels, from level starter to level 6. There will have the tests which express high science, quality and logic at the end of each level. Over level 5, you will have the equivalent capacity as Movers in assessment of Cambridge. Finishing level 6, students can speak English intonation well (Received Pronunciation), so they have basic foundation for studying higher levels.

Content and textbooks are suitable with psychology of primary students. In English lesson, teachers must connect their teaching with information technology. They also have to use flexibly different teaching forms such as: songs, games, storytelling, simulation training, description, drawing, presentation and so on. These help students have interest in studying and remembering knowledge. Therefore, students can develop many skills as well as know more about different fields such as: Art, Painting and Music. It also attracts students to English as their need and then helps them learn other subjects better.

Moreover, this method creates more interaction between teacher and students, helps them receive knowledge more quickly and deeply. Students watch videos and practice with their teacher and friends in English, so this English environment helps students use English naturally and creates the using English habit as the second language when they are in a knowledge English environment.

After learning Phonics, students can pronounce well all words they see, even new words without understanding their meaning, because they knew the spelling rules.  Studying Phonics earlier than English help students pronounce correctly, do not take time to fix later.

This method will exchange to recent one is that most of Vietnamese students learn English pronunciation traditionally. It means only know pronunciation of preciously learned words. In classroom, teacher usually requires students to read in union again and again for remembering the words’ pronunciation. This method makes students remember so much, but there is no effect.

It has brought great results in many countries. For example, in Singapore

In 2000, Singapore education Ministry compared the results of taught English by Phonics method and traditional one. And the results showed that students who learned following Phonics method get the average result 99/100 of pronunciation tests.

Therefore, our education should apply this method widely to enhance teaching English quality.

This is vivid illustration about basic syllables in English.

The meaning of The film “Like stars on earth”

Like stars on earth brings a good message about education. The content of the film only turns around a boy named Ishaan Awasthy has trouble in reading and writing. He is thought to be such a stupid boy that his family has to send him to a special school. However, his life was really changed when he met a good teacher art and get his helping. The film seems to expand a new aspect of teaching children It is better for us to find out the strength and weakness of children , then create various activities to encourage them to develop it
Each child has their own talent, so we should try to discover their strength and weakness order to help them recognize their real ability. The young teacher in the film spent a lot of time to understand why Isshaan can’t learn well like his friend. He decided to make a trip to go to the home of the boy and asked his family to provide some information about the studying of a boy. Actually, he was amazing when he saw the picture of Ishaan as well as his problem. After that, he has tried to look for easiest ways to help Ishaan to read and write. He combined between studying and playing through these activities relating to imagine.
Teacher should develop children’ strength by various activities. In the film “Like stars on the earth” the young teacher always holds many activities to stimulate children to learn such as drawing, camping and so on. He knew that Ishaan is good at drawing, so he decided to organize a drawing competition for all students and teacher in the school. Luckiy, Ishaan won the first prize. Gradually, the result of Ishaan is better than he was. Finally, he becomes the excellent student in the school. Therefore, both teacher and his family felt emotional for the effort of Ishaan and the enthusiasms of teacher
In short, teacher and family should need to know what their children want and wish. We can’t use all the same ways for each child.Each child posses a kind of intelligence,so parent needs to try to discover the strength of children instead of obligating. Let try to understand their emotion and realize children’s ability. Education really needs to have enthusiastic teachers and oblige to change if necessary;

Games are not only used for entertainment but also for educational purposes as well. In fact, using games is an essential part of Teaching Language and also the best technique in teaching the English language because it makes learning fun and it also addresses several problems.

Using Games, especially during teaching English as a second language, offer a lot of benefits such as:

– The students have more fun learning and participating in class. Games create an excited atmosphere to young learners continue learning when they are feeling bored.

– Through games, young learners will have a lot of chance to communicate more. They would be encouraged to know more, think more and also learn more.

– Young learners get to practice more their English while playing.

– Games support more motivation and stimulation for students. It makes them pay more attention to the lessons and exert mental effort in memorizing the rules so they would be able to play well and not let themselves or their teammates down.

– Some games involve physical movement and this keeps everyone focused and stimulated. They make young learners feel enjoyable and interested and forget their tireless.

– Using games is also a venue to help all the students gain more confidence.

– A lot of the games do not require much material and time preparation. The visual aids needed are classroom props and black board. This would effectively give more stimulating and fun classes in so little effort too.

– Games can be used to control the atmosphere in the class.

Therefore, Games are a great component to include in your classroom repertoire of activities because they allow pupils to explore different learning styles and learn the proposed topics at the same time. Teachers should be positive in using game in Teaching English language.

after watching film “taare zameen par”

This film has value of deep human culture because it makes people think a lot of about the relationship between people in society with full of complicating and evolving. It brings me a strong feeling about life and believes in myself throughout Ishaan- main character in this film. I had got a lot of experiences from this film in teaching activities in the future. In fact that, parents and teachers have an important role in development of children. Children in any centuries or any countries in the world have same features as like to learn and discover something in comfortable and free environment, interest in new something; don’t like to do in obligation of others by rules or punishments. Absolutely, I have cried a lot when watching this film, I feel Ishaan very poor and lonely. Educational method of parents incorrectly is the main reason making him falling in stressful and hopeless situation. He is a person who has a talent of draw, but he gets some problems in reading and spelling the alphabet unlike to others. It makes him get troubles in his life. His family and friends consider him as an idiot; they force him to do following their requirements as a robot. Therefore he lived as a robot without dream and passion in his life; he doesn’t care about tests, marks, or progress of himself. He lived in contempt of other until he met Nikumbh, a wonderful teacher made me think a lot about how to teach students well like him. Teacher in a class is not only present or show something for children but also teach them how to perform the ability of yourselves, how to present your passion or dream in your life. I mean that teacher needs to direct and help them to get progress and children can understand school is a heaven not the hell. Let’s teach them in friendly and comfortable environment. Parents and teachers need to share and care their children’s emotion; they need to understand what their children need or what is your dream? Don’t make children foolish or silly because they are talents who have own dreams and abilities. Children’s talent only develop in active social environment and cozy family, therefore each people should put yourselves in students ‘case and thinking.

TAARE ZAMEEN PAR- A FILM CANNOT FORGET

Have you ever seen the film “Taare Zameen Par”? In this writing I will share you my experiences after watching this film.

Taare Zameen Par (Like Stars On Earth) is one of the best films from India. This film was produced by Aamir Khan in 2007. The film tells about a child. He name’s Ishaan Awasthy. He is 9 years old and is an active person. While Ishaan is very well in art, he gets “hard to read”. He makes trouble to write and read, so he always sees words dance in the book. It makes him gets the bad marks in school. His parents and teachers do not understand him. Then, they move him on a boarding school in which there are many rules and draconian punishments. Therefore, he gradually becomes an egocentric person and stops drawing- his hobby. Luckily, a teacher – Nikumbh who is funny and excited, realizes and helps Ishaan from a “mad, lazy, stupid” to an excellent child.

Although Taare Zameen Par is a wonderful film about children, all adults should watch to look back the way to educate of yourself. Through Taare Zameen Par we need to have the best way to teach for children. We have to understand them before we want to educate them. We all have a dream. We see the world and live our life by different ways. Therefore, parents and teachers should understand about the important roles of education so that we will have an exactly method in teaching for children.

In my opinion, education has an important role in developing about physical and mental of students, so we should knows how to encourage students when student feels disappointed and then gives the new method in teaching.

7 STRATEGIES FOR ENHANCING MOTIVATION IN TEACHING ENGLISH

When you want to motivate students in your lesson, you have to understand more clearly about “what is motivation?” and “how should you do to motivate students?” In this writing, I will share you my experiences about two main matter.

Firstly, motivation refers to the combination of effort plus desire to achieve the goal of learning the language plus favorable attitudes toward learning the language (Gardner, 1985, p.10). There are two basic types of motivation:

+ Instrumental motivation drives the learner to acquire another language for money, career, or power.

+ Integrative motivation arises out of a desire to identify with the culture or community that speaks the language.

Secondly, there are seven strategies for enhancing motivation:

1)   Making goals explicit to learners

It is said that if we are aware of what we are expected to learn, then learning will be effective.

According to Bandura and Schunk (1981, pp.586-598) divided into three groups given different goals:

  • Group 1 a vague and general goal of working “productively”
  • Group 2 a distant goal of completing all sets of material by the end of the last session
  •  Group 3 a specific short-term goal for each session

David Nunan believed that it is possible to convey the goals of a lesson or unit of work to learners at a younger age.

2) Select content to which learners can relate

In learning, teacher needs to connect between knowledge in school with the lives of students outside of the classroom. It can enhance motivation.

3) Scaffold the learning process

The term scaffold is a metaphor taken from the construction industry. In education, scaffolds are frameworks that support the learning process.  Learning can be “scaffolded” in many different ways.

4) Provide opportunities for personalization

This point shows that when learners are invited to contribute their own ideas, feelings, and reactions to a lesson, the content becomes more interesting and personally relevant.

5) Encourage group cohesion

Language learning and use are social activities, so when we build learning activities that encourage group cohesion enhances motivation.

6) Provide opportunities for genuine communication

Providing opportunities for genuine communication creates an explicit connection between in-class activities and potential out-of-class language use.

7) Provide learners with evidence of progress for their efforts

In language learning, evidence of progress can come in the form of lists of vocabulary that can be added to each week, checklists of functions acquired, and so on.

In conclusion, you should find out the best ways to motivate students in teaching English to have a good result. Good luck!

Motivation and some strategies for enhancing motivation

tải xuống (1)  motivation-98015

“Affect” refers to the emotional rather than the intellectual side of language. It covers a wide range of concepts, including motivation, anxiety, competitiveness, cooperative learning, and self-esteem. In this writing, I want to focus on motivation and some strategies for enhancing motivation.
Motivation refers to the combination of effort plus desire to achieve the goal of learning the language plus favorable attitudes toward learning the language. It can be considered as a driving force; a psychological one that reinforces an action toward a desired goal. For example, thirsty is a motivation that elicits a desire to drink. Motivation is the purpose or psychological cause of an action. Motivation is an inner drive to behave or act in a certain manner. These inner conditions such as wishes, desires, goals, activate to move in a particular direction in behavior. We can see that when you receive the praises or complements, you will get more excited, more enthusiastic to continue to do something. Similarity, it’s necessary to make motivation for children in learning. Its will encourage them to study harder and harder.
Motivation can be divided into two types: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation refers to motivation that is driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on external pressures or a desire for reward. Extrinsic motivation comes from outside of the individual. Common extrinsic motivations are rewards (money or grades) for showing the desired behavior. Competition is in an extrinsic motivation because it encourages the performer to win and to beat others.
There are 7 strategies for enhancing motivation. However,I will focus on 3 main strategies:
1. Make goals explicit to learners.
If Students are aware of what they are expected to learn, then learning will be more effective. Teacher should give them particular task to help them to know what they need to do. For example, at the end of the lesson, student will be able to know and make sentences with 5 new words about colors topic: Green, blue, orange, red, pink. With this purpose, I believe that it is possible to convey the goals of a lesson or unit of work to learners at a younger age. It’s easy for them to follow and learn.
2. Select content to which learners can relate
Learning is really a process of making connection between what students already know and what they need or want to know. Therefore, teachers should care about students, think about what they want and need. Then select content that connects with the lives of the students outside the classroom to create neutral connections that strengthen learning and enhances motivation.
3. Scaffold the learning process.
In education, “scaffolds” are frameworks that support the learning process.
“Scaffold” means teacher should divide the lesson into some small parts to teach to students with criteria “LESS IS MORE”. For examples, teacher always teach pre-teaching vocabulary before a reading or a listening lesson. By this way, students can understand the meaning of new words and it’s easy for them before reading or listening. Other examples, before teaching a conversation, teacher can use visuals to help students make sense of a conversation. When teaching a song, teacher should divide the song into small parts to teach in each day, we shouldn’t teacher the whole song in one day. The first day, we can teach vocabulary, the next day we can teach the rhythm and then you can teach them how to dance with the lyric.
Teacher should use some of strategies to enhance motivation for students to get better result in learning.

Benifits of using games to teach English for children

In teaching activity, the teachers must generate interest and comfortable atmosphere in class to appeal children. To do that, it requires them to apply the various activities in each lesson such as teaching songs, playing games, using chants, etc. These activities not only help the teachers equip their students knowledge but also assist them easily understand the lesson. In this short writing, I would like to share my thoughts of the good effects on using games to teach English for kids.

There are many popular games which we use in class: guessing the mime, bingo, freely bag, snatch game, for example. Most of them are easily to conduct and bring the good effects on children. Firstly, they generate fun and the comfortable place to motivate students to learn. For instant, the game “slapping board” would attract students’ attention very much at the beginning of the lesson. They would feel free to participate in the tasks without hesitation or fear. Secondly, through the game children can improve their vocabulary, practice using words and phrases as well as grammatical structures. As the result, students’ pronunciation ability would be enhanced very much. Thirdly, thank to taking part in games, children have a lot of chance to communicate a different language with their classmates and teacher. It means that they are practiced English frequently to increase accuracy and fluency in communication. Besides, games also bring to pupils many benefits of developing their skills. Obviously, games build on children hearing and understanding ability the general rules through listening teacher’s instruction. If students gasp the rule after listening what the teacher talk, they can carry out their exercise easily. On the other hands, pupils also have chance to work in pairs or teams not only work individually. They would be free to share their experiences, ideas or thoughts and try to complete their task. That means they show the high responsibility for their work when they participating in game. Lastly, kids would be experienced as the role of players such as leaders, reporters, etc. Therefore, they become more flexible and active in learning and other activities.

In conclusion, games have many good effects on teaching English for children. The teacher should carefully study to apply the most suitable game for each task to get the best result.

That’s all my share about using game in teaching English for young learners. Please visit and leave your comment on my writing. Thanks a lot!

The roles of teacher and chalkboard in my mind

Hi, everybody!

This is my share about the roles of teacher and chalkboard as teaching aids.

In general, when we talking about the teaching aids in class most of us usually think of some facilities for study first such as textbook, tape, chalk, projector and so on. However, if the condition in the class is limited or is lacking in modern equipment, what should we do to teach for your students? Of course, the teachers must be active and creative to use themselves as teaching aids to convey the lesson to their students. This is a list of the roles of teachers in class in which they are considered as teaching aids.

1) A real object: When the teacher teaches vocabulary about part of the body, she or he can point at each part in her body to illustrate it for the pupils.

2) A model: The best way to give instruction of a game to children is that the teacher should be model first.

3) A singer: Let’s imagine that you must teach your students a new song but you have no electricity, no record. Of course, you must be a singer in this situation.

4) A role – player: Sometimes, the teacher also participates in a play with his or her students and acts as a character in it.

5) A story – teller: One of the most popular teaching activity in class is that the teacher tell a story for pupils.

6) An instructor: This is the most important role of the teacher to instruct students what they should do and how to do the tasks.

7) A manager: The teacher must manage the whole class in all of activity.

8) An artist: If the teacher cannot prepare pictures to illustrate, she or he can draw on the board to help student understand and imagine easily.

9) A pantomime: The teacher can mime and ask students to guess the vocabulary through his or her action.

10) A composer: Sometimes, teacher can compose a new song or chant to teach pupils. The funny song will generate interest for children to take part in the teacher’s activity.

As you know, the chalkboard is a traditional image in classroom and is very familiar with both the teacher and students. There are many roles of chalkboard which are listed below:

1) To write the content of the lesson.

2) To use to play game such as “slap the board”, “nough and cross”.

3) To decorate in the special day such as The Teacher’s Day, The Woman’s Day.

4) To use for acting.

5) To use as a stage to role – play.

6) To stick the sub – board or pictures.

7) To use for displaying the students’ exercises.

8) To draw shapes, pictures.

Thanks for your reading!
