Using songs in teaching English for children

People nowadays, especially young people, seem to be impossible to live without music. It’s not only an effective tool of entertainment, but also education.

There are a lot of benefits of using songs in the classroom. When we sing and act out songs in the classes, young learners are getting vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, the rhythm of the language, the grammar, listening skill. Songs is great teaching language tool in the class. We can use song to signal the transitions, move an activity to another activity. Moreover, songs are also great for creating a positive atmosphere in the classroom.

Firstly, songs are used to give instructions. Students don’t often pay much attention to the word instructions. Using songs is the best way to draw attention when you want students to move to other activities. Teachers can use the same songs for the similar activities to form students’ habit. For example, teacher can ask the children to sing the same song every greeting, moving, or breaking time. Each lesson should teach the children just one or two songs, but keep repeating them to students are able to remember the tune, the lyrics, and also understand the meaning. Therefore, songs reinforce longer after students leave the class.

Secondly, teachers should make the students feel comfortable and relax when they go to school by using some fun sounds and songs. It helps students feel safety and ready to learning English. It’s great motivating expediency because the children always think that songs are for entertainment, not study, and therefore they feel enjoyable to learn English songs.

Fun song is the simple things to learn if you put some gestures, or dancing. It’s suitable for many kinds or levels of students, even though they don’t have musical intelligence to sing well, they can imitate the gestures, dance, or just sing some parts of the song. Besides, the teachers should choose the songs with short, conversational, and understandable lyrics to set it in the students mind as permanent phrases and they can use it afterward.

Songs have many benefits, but it also has certain limitations to consider.  We have to use the suitable songs to teach in the class to be match with the objectives of the lesson about the topic, vocabulary, or structure. Teaching songs can’t replace teaching communicating language in formal way because there are some differences between the language used in the songs and real communicating language. Using song with the proper frequency is also an important thing because if we use it too much, the students will be bored. If we don’t use it often, the students will forget them.

To raising the strengths and minimizing the limitations, the suggestion is that we should develop songs to be tasks and matching it to our curriculum to get the best benefits.

Some notes for using songs in teaching English for pupils.

It is important fo a teacher to find out a new teaching method. Because this adds taste for the lesson as well as the results which are what pupils achieved. That new teaching method certainly should be fit with the goals and objectives of each lesson so that teachers can limit the waste time. Using songs to teach English for kids is considered as one of the useful method. However, how to apply this method effectively is a big question.. Here are some notes which teachers should pay attention in order to avoid mistakes when using it.

* Not just for fun only!

Songs by themselves are usually  noisy and happy, so they can cheer pupils up through their tones, lyrics and music. Songs in classroom can break down the boring atmosphere. That means students will forget feeling of sleepy. just simply because they love songs. (Perhaps, the prefer  listening to songs to studying). Therefore, teachers can completely base on this characteristics to design a lesson in a song. The used songs should cover what the teacher would like to teach or what the lesson focuses on. The content of the song ought to be couple with the content of the lesson. For example, when you teach your pupils the lesson of weather, you had better choose the song relating to somethings like hot, cold, warm, sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, etc. Thus, you teach your kids that song means you are teaching them the vocabulary about weather. This has both aims in entertainment and learning.

* Teaching English through songs, not teaching an English song.

Some teachers may intend to teach their little students an English song instead of teaching English by using a song. This is a big mistake. Remember that songs are the good tool in teaching, so do not move your lesson of teaching English on to a singing lesson.

* KISS ( keep it short and simple)

It is worthless to show the pupils a complex and long song because they can not  accept  or keep it long in their mind. A short, simple and meaningful song will be the best choice in place of  a hard one.

* Be creative!

How interesting a song is if it designed to be another song with the same tone! It is so great. A song can be used to review and broad. By replacing some key words following the topic you are going to teach , you now have a new  and exciting song for your pupils. It not only saves your time to try to look for a strange song but also is easy for kids to remember the lesson. In addition, playing audio of songs is not the best way all the time. Sometimes, teachers can sing that song in case you get troubles of teaching equipment. That is fine.

To sum up, songs can be used in variety if purposes but in teaching English, they should be suitable with the lesson and the pupils’ character. Teachers should have a look at some notes  to use them effectively and make a perfect lesson.

Factors that make your storytelling lesson successful.

It seems that pupils prefers listening to a story to studying. Because stories attract little kids by characters, situations which are more beautiful than in the real life. So why don’t we move a lesson into a storytelling? However, to have a successful storytelling lesson, teachers should pay attention to some factors which build your good steps.

The first one is voice. It is obviously the most important thing that a teacher needs to take care because he or she is in a storytelling class and an oral lesson. In other word, he or she has to talk, say and tell. How a storytelling lesson is if it is totally silent?
How to make teacher’s voice better or the useful ways to use our voice effectively? Changing tone, intonation in different contexts such as raise our voice, low our voice; making sounds as the sounds of an animal, the sound of wind, rain and so on are really necessary to create a funny lesson. Most of success depends on how a teacher plays with he or she voice in a story since this brings the life of the story to our kids vividly.
The second one is gestures. Combining actions with what you are saying helps you express your ideas more explicitly and understandable. It has no reason to deny the great power of body language in communication. It is also right in teaching. Kids still can guess what you want to say through your gestures, eye contact, facial expression, even you do not say anything.
The third one is visual aids. Materials are always the good tools which help teachers make the lesson more interesting and practical. The pictures relating to the content of the story help kids imagine easily. Consequently, kids will remember the story long and deeply.

The last one is tasks. Teachers should design tasks to measure and evaluate what and how much pupils achieve after the lesson. The tasks  should be clear and suitable with the level of your kids. They also should focus on the object of the lesson. For example, if you want to check vocabulary or new words which the kids have got, the teacher had better draw a task in the form of vocabulary, not in grammatical form.
Overall, four aspects above are all important. And it is better to combine them skillfully.
